The

Problem

In-Office sports and gaming facilities are one of the best ways to help people meet each other, develop relationships, and of course, take a break from their brain-smashing work. But often, the availability of sports equipment, like the foosball table, ping-pong table, Xbox, football ground, etc is difficult to track.

My

Solution

Based on my research, I decided to create a mobile experience that helps employees find out which in-office sports and gaming facilities are available, and if available, they could even book a round of the game with anybody in the office. They could challenge and connect with others that encouraged team building and collaboration.

Aligning User and Business Goals

UX STRATEGY

I sent out a survey to 40 people (Indian residents) who fit into our target audience, identified through secondary research. This survey helped collect data related to - demographics, lifestyle, & business.

USER PERSONAS

I created 3 user personas based upon my research which helped me understand my users' needs, experiences, behaviors, and goals.

Getting inside the user's head

EMPATHY MAP & USER SCENARIO

Based on my interaction with the users and the person I had created, I created these Empathy maps and user scenarios which allowed me to step into their shoes.

USER SCENARIO (Saurav):

Saurav is planning to take part in the basketball tournament. So it’s very important for him to practice on a daily basis. He doesn’t get time to practice after going home so he wants to utilize his break time during office hours. The booking system has enabled him to book his slot for the entire week so that he doesn’t miss a single day of practice.

USER SCENARIO (Deepti):

Deepti loves her job but because of that, she ends up spending most of her time sitting in front of her computer which is slowly making her fat and lazy. She wants to stay active during office hours. With the help of the booking system, she is able to plan a match with her friends and get to know more about the sports societies in the office.

BRAINSTORMING

POV 1

Saurav needs to practice playing football daily during office hours because he has a match coming up and does not get time for it after office hours.

POV 2

Deepti needs to play some game regularly because she wants to stay fit and doesn’t want to become lazy as she spends most of her time sitting and working on her laptop.

HOW MIGHT WE QUESTIONS

  1. How Might We create an app that helps employees book a slot seamlessly?

  2. How Might We inspire employees to use the app?

  3. How Might We make sure that the app is used fairly?

  4. How Might We make the employees understand the importance physical activity during the day?

  5. How Might We encourage people to become active?

  6. How Might We spread information related to in-office games and sports?

  IDEAS

  • Make it intuitive

  • Make the loading fast

  • The UI should be user friendly

  • Useful features

  • Engagement

  • Motivational content to stay fit

  • By providing health trackers

  • Have a time limit for each employee per day

  • All games should have a feature to check if there is any booking and shouldn’t allow anyone else

  • Give them information about their health

  • Providing knowledge of the positive effects of physical activity

  • Having an option to create challenges

  • Having tournaments

  • Giving awards or perks for most active employees

  • Using the App

Laying out the user's movement through the app

Looking back

at what I learned and achieved

Results and impact:

Based on my research, currently big companies don't have any such internal systems for the employees. I discussed my idea with a few users and they said that it is very useful as it will save time and also allow people to network with people of similar interests. Plus this will serve as a important platform where even new joinees can get to know about what activites are happening.

Main challenge and lessons learnt:

I did this project along with my full time job and since it was time bound too it was a little tedious at times. This was my first UX design and research project. It was a fun problem to work on. Since there are no such apps currently available it required a lot of extensive research to understand the users and what features could be beneficial and add to the experience. There is still a lot that I can improve, and I'll be working on the iterations.

Next steps:

I need to complete usability testing prior to which I will work on the design system, logo designing, final UI, prototyping and micro-interactions.
